Driving Pulse Innovation & Trade Across Mexico-LATAM

Sometimes, work will bring you to a sunny place in the middle of January, and when you're based in Minneapolis, it's an amazing change of scenery. This past week, PURIS had the opportunity to participate in the USA Beans, Peas, Lentils, Chickpeas MX-LATAM Conference 2025

During my time at the conference hosted by the USA Pulses Group, there was a heavy presence of the whole bean markets, as well as conversations about how to push the industry forward. The opening remarks highlighted Mexico's growing importance as a key player in global trade. In 2024, Mexico surpassed China and Canada as the number one export market for the US, driven by increasing demand amidst record droughts.

The LATAM audience raised critical questions about industry responses to administrative changes and potential tariffs. The panel was cautiously optimistic, believing that the new US administration will prioritize port logistics and infrastructure. This sentiment reflects a broader need for strategic planning and adaptability in the face of geopolitical shifts.

The commodity outlook under geopolitical changes was thought-provoking. Their predictions covered a range of macro and microeconomic issues, from Bitcoin and small nuclear power to US debt and global economic activity. As always, it is critical to stay informed and adaptable in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Jeff Rumney's presentation on the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council Report highlighted the growing demand for pulse flour in the LATAM market. The panel emphasized the need to prioritize this region, recognizing its potential for significant growth. However, commodity pricing remains a challenge, with the possibility of losing acres to soybeans in some areas.

The PURIS panel was moderated by Chelsea Didinger from A Legume a Day and featured Ewa Pietrysiak from USA Pulses, Brad Barnes of Pure Food Consulting, and Chef Sergio Cervantes, who owns and operates the award-winning vegan restaurant Revolution Verde in Monterey, MX. Together, we addressed key questions about the plant-based industry in LATAM. Discussions included growth potential, affordability, and formulating with pea proteins.

The USA Beans, Peas, Lentils, Chickpeas MX-LATAM Conference 2025 highlighted the critical role of collaboration and adaptation in our industry's future. As we reflect on the insightful discussions and forecasts shared, it's clear that navigating geopolitical shifts and market dynamics demands agility and strategic foresight. PURIS remains committed to driving innovation and sustainability across LATAM, harnessing the growing demand for pulse-based products. Together with industry leaders, we are poised to seize opportunities and overcome challenges, ensuring a vibrant future for plant-based solutions in the region and beyond.
