Harvest timing, combine performance, and storage management can all influence how many bushels ultimately reach market and whether those bushels qualify for premium food-grade opportunities.
For soybeans, moisture content can drop rapidly during hot, dry, and windy conditions. Research has shown that harvesting soybeans below market moisture results in giving away saleable weight, while overly dry beans are also more susceptible to shatter losses. Many specialists recommend beginning harvest around 14-15% moisture rather than waiting for beans to reach 13% or less. Research from the University of Nebraska has shown that soybeans harvested and sold at 9% moisture rather than 13% can yield roughly 4% less saleable weight. In a 75 bu/ac soybean crop, that can translate into several bushels per acre that never make it to the scale ticket.
Yellow field peas present a similar challenge. Once mature, pea crops can dry down quickly, and delaying harvest increases the risk of pod shatter, weathering, and quality loss. While pulse research often notes reduced cracking and splitting when peas are harvested at higher moisture levels, the ideal harvest target ultimately depends on your storage setup. At PURIS, we generally recommend harvesting peas around 15.5% moisture when aeration is available, allowing airflow to safely condition the crop in storage. For growers without aeration capability, a target closer to 13.5% moisture is typically recommended to promote safe storage. Waiting too long for peas to become excessively dry can increase cracking, splitting, and harvest losses while also exposing the crop to additional weather risk.
We spend months focusing on fertility, weed control, disease management, and stand establishment. Yet the final 5% of the season can determine whether we capture the full value of those investments.
