Clarifying the Facts: PURIS Addresses Lead in Protein Supplement Reports

In response to recent media coverage highlighting the presence of lead in protein supplements, PURIS is offering clarity and education on the topic of heavy metals in food, an issue that deserves thoughtful discussion and informed action.

At PURIS, we believe that reducing exposure to heavy metals like lead is a shared responsibility across the food system. We’ve taken a proactive approach to monitoring and managing heavy metals in our ingredients, and we support efforts to raise awareness and improve standards industry-wide. Our internal specifications for lead are among the most stringent in the industry. PURIS ingredients and pea proteins are used in sensitive food with known low heavy metal thresholds, reflecting our commitment to safety, transparency, and continuous improvement.

The Consumer Reports article references California’s Proposition 65 (Prop 65) safety limits, which sets extremely conservative thresholds for substances like lead. These thresholds are designed to protect the most vulnerable populations under worst-case exposure scenarios, assuming daily consumption over a lifetime. It’s important to understand that Prop 65 is not a federal safety standard. The FDA’s guidance level for lead is 8.8 micrograms/day for women of childbearing age; more than 17 times higher than the Prop 65 threshold. Many everyday foods, including spinach, sweet potatoes, and chocolate, do not meet Prop 65 thresholds but are considered safe under FDA and international standards.

The article implies that all plant-based proteins contain high levels of lead. This is misleading. PURIS’ data shows that our pea proteins have consistently low levels of lead, often lower than whole peas due to our advanced processing methods. Heavy metal content varies based on soil conditions, crop type, and processing methods. PURIS’ vertically integrated model allows us to manage these variables and deliver clean, safe ingredients that meet the needs of all consumers from athletes to toddlers.

Lead is naturally occurring in soil and water, and trace amounts are found in nearly all plant-derived foods. The risk depends on cumulative exposure, age, diet, and health status. For healthy adults, the levels cited in the article are likely below thresholds of concern.

That said, PURIS supports efforts to reduce exposure wherever possible. We believe manufacturers must be transparent and accountable, and we are committed to helping our partners navigate this complex landscape.

PURIS’ aspiration of a Plant Strong Planet reflects our commitment to:

  • Rigorous testing for contaminants
  • Transparent specifications
  • Responsiveness to customer needs
  • Continuous improvement in safety and quality

We don’t just meet standards - we aim to exceed and continuously improve them. Our goal is to deliver ingredients that are safe, trusted by consumers and suitable for the most sensitive applications.

We invite any brand, manufacturer, journalist, or stakeholder concerned about heavy metals in protein to reach out to PURIS. We’ve taken a deep dive into this issue and are ready to help our partners deliver products that meet the needs of all consumers.
